Computer Algebra System (CAS)

A piece of software that can do symbolic algebraic manipulations and calculations instead of the simpler rational arithmetic of simple calculators.

Common examples:

• Maxima, an open source CAS written in Common Lisp
• Mathematica, a proprietary CAS and simulation suite from Wolfram
• Symbolica, a proprietary CAS library
• MATLAB, a proprietary mathematics and simulation suite that includes the Symbolic Math Toolbox CAS
• Wolfram Alpha, a proprietary online CAS from Wolfram
